It is associated with preventable chronic diseases in childhood, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, asthma, depression, and anxiety, as well as higher health care expenditures. Although childhood obesity is a complex disease with many contributing factors, there are numerous ways to support children and families in achieving a healthy weight and establishing lifelong healthy habits. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is hosting a webinar that will highlight opportunities for state Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) programs to strengthen childhood obesity prevention and treatment efforts. The webinar will feature the latest data and clinical guidelines, presented by CMS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It will showcase examples of how states are addressing childhood obesity in Medicaid and CHIP, including the barriers encountered, strategies used to overcome challenges, and the success achieved through quality improvement initiatives. CMS invites all interested staff from state Medicaid and CHIP programs, along with their Medicaid and CHIP managed care plans, pediatric providers, public health agencies, and other quality improvement partners, to take part in this important webinar.
