Racism and child health in the USA
Racism and child health in the USA
Racial and ethnic disparities in health are substantial and persistent in the USA, present in the earliest years of life and profoundly affect children’s health throughout their lives. Societal structures and systems—including health care, education, housing, and legal and economic systems—act individually and in combination to create and perpetuate structural racism, which influences a child’s opportunity for healthy development. Therefore, policies must intentionally dismantle systemic racism to foster an inclusive and thriving society for all racially and ethnically minoritised children. This Series summarises evidence on racial and ethnic inequities in the quality of paediatric care, outlines priorities for future research to better understand and address these inequities, and discusses policy solutions to advance child health equity in the USA.
