People with cancer want to do everything they can to combat the disease, manage its symptoms, and cope with the side effects of treatment. Some may find some mind and body practices helpful for managing symptoms or side effects of treatment.
  • Mindfulness-based stress reduction may help cancer patients reduce anxiety, stress, fatigue, and sleep disturbances and improve their general mood and quality of life.
  • A small amount of evidence suggests that yoga may help to improve anxiety, depression, distress, and stress in people with cancer and may help to lessen fatigue in breast cancer survivors.
  • Acupuncture may help manage treatment-related nausea and vomiting.
  • Massage therapy may help relieve symptoms such as pain, nausea, anxiety, and depression—but cancer patients should check with their health care providers before having a massage to find out whether any special precautions need to be taken.
Be sure to tell all your health care providers about any new complementary health approach you’re thinking about using. It’s important for your providers to know so that they can make sure all parts of your care work together.
