In recent years, there have been growing reports of Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in industrialized countries. Many of these infections are thought to be foodborne and caused by genotype 3 HEV. NIAID researchers have been able to adapt an isolated strain of genotype 3 HEV to grow in cell culture, which could potentially be used to develop vaccines and treatments for HEV.
