New research suggests that single embryo transfers can reduce multiple births in the US

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Reproductive Health recently published a research article in the journal Fertility and Sterility evaluating assisted reproductive technology (ART) embryo transfer practices and their impact on multiple births. Based on analyses of data from CDC’s National ART Surveillance System, the authors found that almost half of ART-related multiple births result from transferring two embryos to young patients or recipients of donor eggs.
Performing single embryo transfers in such patients could reduce the number of multiple pregnancies and births, which have increased risks for mothers and infants. Improving ART practices requires coordinated efforts by multiple stakeholders, as outlined in CDC’s “National Public Health Action Plan for the Detection, Prevention and Management of Infertility”.
