This announcement comes as CDC kicks off its 2011 observance of Get Smart About Antibiotics Week, an international collaboration that coincides with European Antibiotic Awareness Day and Canada’s Antibiotic Awareness Week. CDC’s Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work and Get Smart for Healthcare programs are designed to educate consumers and health care providers about appropriate use of antibiotics. In conjunction with Get Smart About Antibiotics Week, CDC is also announcing a partnership with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement to pilot test a tool to help hospitals implement practical strategies to improve antibiotic use. The pilot testing is currently under way in eight U.S. hospitals.

Throughout the Week, CDC’s Safe Healthcare Blog, we will look closely at the impact that antibiotics, antibiotic resistance, and antibiotic stewardship are having in our nation’s healthcare facilities. Join the discussion at http://blogs.cdc.gov/safehealthcare.
