Using X-ray-nanoparticle interactions for improved radiation therapy

Using X-ray-nanoparticle interactions for improved radiation therapyRadiation therapy is a time-honored approach to destroying cancer cells that escape the knife, or which are not accessible for surgery. However, it has its risks and limitations. Now a new study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, indicates a promising new way to deliver locally aggressive radiation therapy in cancer, using the element gadolinium.

Study reveals effectiveness of single-dose radiotherapy for cancer in the spine

Study reveals effectiveness of single-dose radiotherapy for cancer in the spineA single dose of radiotherapy is as "effective" as five doses for end-of-life cancer patients suffering with painful spinal canal compression, finds a large study conducted by UCL. Spinal canal compression is a common complication in cancer patients when the cancer has spread to their spine. Radiotherapy is used to control pain and alleviate symptoms.
