The NHLBI, Tobacco, and Health: 70 Years of Progress

On Wednesday, September 12th, pulmonary physician and epidemiologist Dr. Jonathan Samet of the Colorado School of Public Health will speak at NIH as part of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) 70th Anniversary Lecture Series. Dr. Samet will discuss NHLBI-funded research over the past several decades that helped reveal smoking as a major risk factor for chronic respiratory disease, with continued developments in the consequences of second-hand smoke, the lungs’ response to smoking cessation, and factors that affect disease susceptibility to smoking. Dr. Samet is a leader in global health, focusing on prevention of respiratory diseases and cancer through control of risk factors such as tobacco and air pollution. He has served on several national health policy bodies, including as chair of the EPA’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee and the FDA’s Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee.
