NIH-Funded Scientists Deepen Genetic Understanding of
Eosinophilic Esophagitis
Researchers have identified genetic markers linked to a higher risk of
developing eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), a chronic inflammatory disease
of the esophagus. EoE can cause difficulty eating and often is associated
with food allergy. Their findings suggest that several genes, including
allergy-related genes, are involved in development of EoE. The results also
may help explain why the disease is confined to the esophagus. The work,
published online July 13 in Nature Genetics, was supported in part by the
Consortium of Food Allergy Research, which is funded by NIAID and the
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
