NCCN eBulletin March 2011

Welcome to the NCCN 16th Annual Conference Wrap-Up, part 1 of a two-part Special Edition of NCCN eBulletin!




With more than 1,400 attendees from the United States and around the globe, the NCCN 16th Annual Conference: Clinical Practice Guidelines & Quality Cancer Care™ was held at the Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, FL, March 9 – 13, 2011. The NCCN Annual Conference draws oncologists, oncology fellows, nurses, pharmacists, and many other health care professionals involved in the care of patients with cancer. This year's conference featured updates to selected NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines™) and new cancer therapies, discussion forums with experts from NCCN Member Institutions, and roundtable discussions featuring the foremost professionals from the academic, patient advocacy, government, payor, industry, and business realms of cancer care. In part 1 of our two-part special edition, we'll review conference events scheduled from Wednesday, March 9 through Thursday, March 10.

Please be on the lookout for part 2 of our two-part special edition on April 4, 2011, covering conference events scheduled from Friday, March 11 through Saturday, March 12.

The Pharmacy Program provided pharmacists with insights regarding "best practices" on how other institutions are dealing with REMS, utilizing biomarkers, and incorporating new therapies into practice. ► NCCN Fellows Recognition Program Demonstrates the Promise of a New Generation of Oncologists

On Wednesday, March 9, NCCN conducted the 2011 NCCN Fellows Recognition Program: New Horizons in Quality Cancer Care™, with more than 200 fellows from around the country participating in the program. The program provides fellows with an opportunity to meet leading faculty from NCCN Member Institutions and to attend a series of lectures targeted specifically to specialists in training. ► NCCN Roundtable Addresses the Many Faces and Challenges of Caregivers

A roundtable dedicated to the challenges that caregivers confront highlighted the need for honest information and emotional support at the NCCN 16th Annual Conference. Sam Donaldson of ABC News moderated the moving discussion between notable caregivers ranging from spouses, mothers, daughters, and clinicians. ► 'The Coach and the Critic: Stories of Caregivers Where 'Kill Me' Is Not an Option'

Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the national office of the American Cancer Society, J. Leonard Lichtenfeld, MD, MACP, recalls his emotional reactions to the "The Many Faces and Challenges of Caregivers" roundtable discussion at the NCCN 16th Annual Conference. In "Dr. Len's Cancer Blog," Dr. Lichtenfeld recounts his touching experience of the stories from the panel of caregivers and their "frequently incredible accounts of the human spirit." NCCN Flash Update: NCCN Guidelines and Compendium Updated

NCCN has published updates to the NCCN Guidelines and the NCCN Drugs & Biologics Compendium (NCCN Compendium™) for Breast Cancer. These NCCN Guidelines are currently available as Version 2.2011.

* Denosumab was added to the Guidelines as an option for the prevention of skeletal-related events in patients with bone metastases with the following footnote: "Denosumab, zoledronic acid, or pamidronate (all with calcium and vitamin D supplementation) should be given (category 1) in addition to chemotherapy or endocrine therapy if bone metastasis present, expected survival 3 months or more, and renal function is adequate. Patients should undergo a dental examination with preventive dentistry prior to initiation of this therapy. The optimal schedule and duration of denosumab, zoledronic acid, or pamidronate are unknown."

* Eribulin was added to the list of preferred single agents for recurrent or metastatic breast cancer (category 2A).

* The discussion section has been updated to reflect the changes in the algorithm.
