A Collaborative Solution for Tropical Diseases: The Luso-American Response
The 2011 Conference on HIV/AIDS Research
Meeting Date: September 7-9, 2011

Location: Luso-American Foundation: Lisbon, Portugal

Meeting Concept: The immediate impact of tropical infectious diseases is largely regional. However, due to the challenges of eliminating diseases in resource-poor settings and the reverberating effects of such wide scale morbidity and mortality, there is a global responsibility to develop collaborative, synchronous initiatives and solutions. A shared contribution of resources as well as scientific, cultural, and regional knowledge through global partnerships would expedite the process of reducing the burden of diseases in the developing world context.

The Luso-American Development Foundation in collaboration with NIAID, National Institutes of Health (NIH), has developed a three-year annual conference series which highlights the importance of developing multidisciplinary collaborative research projects in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis, particularly in Africa. This series is entitled: “A Collaborative Solution for Tropical Diseases: The Luso-American Response." The series commenced with the Tuberculosis Conference in October 2007, followed by the Malaria Meeting in July 2009. HIV is the subject of the September 7-9, 2011, conference in Lisbon.

The 2011 Luso-American HIV/AIDS Research Conference will include:

1.A call for abstracts with a selection of abstracts for attendance at the meeting and/or for oral or poster presentation—based on scientific peer review.
2.Invited plenary presentations by selected HIV/AIDS research experts
3.Parallel sessions with focused discussions on selected scientific topics
4.Luso-American Collaborative Response Awards on HIV/AIDS (LACR Awards): Small start-up grants up to 20k Euros given to the best collaborative projects developed by conference participants during or immediately following the conference
5.A linked workshop on NIH grant application procedures and guidelines (tentative)
