CDC Expert Commentary on STD Screening for MSM is Available

CDC Expert Commentary on STD Screening for MSM is Available

DSTDP Director Gail Bolan, MD is featured in Medscape’s latest CDC Expert Commentary, Screening for Sexually Transmitted Disease: Who, When, and How. This podcast provides concrete actions to ensure clinicians appropriately screen and treat sexually active men who have sex with men (MSM) for rectal and pharyngeal gonorrhea and rectal chlamydia infections.

Each year in the United States, there are more than one million new gonorrhea and chlamydia infections. Although most gonorrhea and chlamydia infections are among female adolescents and young women, research shows continued increases of these sexually transmitted infections among MSM. The commentary reminds healthcare providers that most rectal and pharyngeal infections are asymptomatic and urine-based tests fail to detect these non-genital infections. For these reasons, CDC recommends providers to take a
sexual history and screen the patient at exposed sites.
