According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the leading causes of death among men ages 18 and over in the United States are heart disease and cancer. This means nearly half the male population in the United States is dying from diseases that are largely preventable.
To encourage men to make their health a priority, the Military Health System is hosting a Men’s Health Twitter Chat Tuesday June 9, 2015, from 12 p.m.-1 p.m. EDT.
A state-of-the-art blood mobile traveled across the country – from Riverside, Calif., to Bethesda, Md. — to be delivered to the Armed Services Blood Bank Center at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Getting the vehicle took four years, but thanks to the tireless efforts of Army Lt. Col. Robert K. Pell Jr., former chief of blood services for the ASBBC, the mobile facility finally arrived May 5.
While serving at Fort Stewart, Georgia, in 2010, I stopped to get a haircut at a local barber shop. While sitting there, a frail-looking old man walked in by himself. Everyone was shocked that this man arrived at the barber shop alone, but even more surprised that he was able to drive himself there in the first place. As the barbers got him to talking and sharing his wisdom, he told all of us that he was 99 years old. When one of the men asked him to share his secret to living a long, healthy life, I gave him my undivided attention.
