| Microdialysis is a valuable tool in neuroscience that can be used to investigate and learn about complex brain functions through the collection of small-molecular-weight substances from the extracellular fluid or interstitial space. | |

| Researchers have devised a cheap, non-invasive and specific means to monitor progesterone production in women. The new technique uses saliva and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The research was published in the Annals of Clinical Biochemistry. | |

| Acetolactate synthase can be found in plants, fungi, archaea, and bacteria, but not animals. This enzyme is involved in condensing two pyruvate molecules to form acetolactate, or pyruvate and 2-ketobutyrate. This leads to the formation of acetohydroxybutyrate (AHB). In the case of eubacteria, like E.coli or Salmonella typhimurium, three types of acetolactate synthase (AHAS) enzymes are present: AHAS I, AHAS II, AHAS III. However, in E.coli, AHAS II is inactive, while in Salmonella, AHAS III is inactive. | |

| Drugs are metabolized in the liver using several enzyme-catalyzed processes. These enzymes are collectively referred to as the hepatic microsomal enzyme system, and they are usually present in the endoplasmic reticulum of hepatocytes. | |

| Scientists have shown that a protein which is abundant in the blood of young mice can delay the aging process and improve the activity levels of older mice. The study was carried out by researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the results were published in the journal Cell Metabolism on June 13, 2019. | |
