History of GMOs
Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are plants or animals that have had their DNA altered. Usually engineers will take a portion of DNA from bacteria, viruses, or other living organisms, and transplant it into the DNA of the GMO. These combinations do not occur in nature, nor can they be created via cross-breeding. (Source: http://www.nongmoproject.org/learn-more/)
The history of GMOs dates back to the discovery of DNA in 1935 by Russian scientist Andrei Nikolaevitch Belozersky. It was not until 1973, when a medical student at Stanford came up with the idea for altering DNA, that the scientific community started down the road which would eventually end at GMOs. In1975 a conference was held in which a few biologists, doctors, and lawyers created safe guidelines for using genetically altered DNA. General Electric received the first GMO patent in 1980, and 1982 the FDA approved insulin created with GMOs. It took 12 years for GMOs to reach the supermarket, but by 1999 over 100 million acres of crop used GMO seeds. In 1997 the European Union passed rules requiring labeling on all GMO food products, even animal feed. Most recently, in 2013, Connecticut became the first state to require labeling of GMOs.
