Health Tip: Packing Food for a Road Trip
Be sure to wash your hands
Wednesday, April 17, 2013
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers these suggestions:
- Always wash your hands before preparing food and before eating.
- Choose shelf-stable snacks that are easy to enjoy on the go, such as cereal, trail mix, applesauce containers, popcorn, peanut butter sandwiches, fruit, celery or carrots.
- Pack perishables in a cooler with plenty of ice. Make sure food is not left outside the cooler for longer than two hours (one hour if temps are 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher). Also make sure the temperature of the cooler's contents stay below 40 degrees.
- Store coolers and lunch bags in the car itself, rather than in the trunk.
