Nearly 10% of Adults with Advanced CKD Reported Not Having Health Insurance

More than 1 in 7 US adults, or about 37 million people, are estimated to have chronic kidney disease (CKD), and most of them are not aware of having it. CKD awareness has been associated with easier access to health care. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011 to 2016) showed that about 91% of adults aged 20–60 years with CKD stage 3 or 4reported having health insurance. By race/ethnicity, the percentages reporting having insurance were 93% for non-Hispanic whites, 88% for non-Hispanic blacks, and 80% for Mexican-Americans. Strategies to improve CKD prevention, awareness, detection, and management are important to consider for at-risk populations, regardless of health insurance status.
