Healthy Diet Lowers CKD Risk in Type 2 Diabetics
(Ivanhoe Newswire) – A recent study reports that drinking a moderate amount of alcohol and eating a healthy diet may be associated with decreased risk of progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Daniela Dunkler, PhD, of McMaster University, Ontario, Canada, and colleagues examined the association between alcohol, a healthy diet, protein, and sodium intake with the progression of CKD in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Study results show that 31.7 percent of patients developed CKD and 8.3 percent of patients died after 5.5 years. “A healthy diet and moderate intake of alcohol may decrease the incidence or progression of CKD among individuals with type 2 diabetes. Sodium intake, within a wide range, and normal protein intake are not associated with CKD,” Daniela Dunkler, PhD, and colleagues were quoted as saying.
