COVID-19 Resources

The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) health topic page in MedlinePlus links you to resources that describe the symptoms, testing, risks, and how you can protect yourself and your family.

What is a Respiratory Pathogens Panel?

A respiratory pathogens (RP) panel checks for viruses and bacteria in your respiratory tract. Your respiratory tract is made up of parts of the body involved in breathing and include your lungs, nose, and throat.
There are two ways a provider may take a sample for testing:
Nasopharyngeal swab:
  • You will tip your head back.
  • Your health care provider will insert a swab into your nostril until it reaches the upper part of your throat.
  • Your provider will rotate the swab and remove it.
Nasal aspirate:
  • Your provider will inject a saline solution into your nose, then remove the sample with gentle suction.
Learn more about the test and what the results may mean.

Tetanus

Tetanus is a serious illness caused by Clostridium bacteria. The bacteria live in soil, saliva, dust, and manure and can enter your body through a deep cut, like those you might get from stepping on a nail. The infection can lead to "locking" of the jaw making it impossible to open your mouth or swallow. Tetanus is a medical emergency and you need to get treatment in a hospital. A vaccine can prevent tetanus.

Knee Replacement Surgery

So you've decided that knee replacement surgery is right for you, you've prepared your home for your recovery, now learn more about the surgical procedure.  Come back next week when we explore what to expect during your recovery.

Anesthesia

If you are having surgery, your doctor will give you medicine called an anesthetic that will reduce or prevent pain. There are three main types:
  • Local - numbs one small area of the body. You stay awake and alert.
  • Regional - blocks pain in an area of the body, such an arm or leg. A common type is epidural anesthesia, which is often used during childbirth.
  • General - makes you unconscious. You do not feel any pain, and you do not remember the procedure afterwards.
The type of anesthesia or sedation you get depends on many factors including the procedure you are having and your current health. Learn more about anesthesia.

Easy Cheesy Enchiladas

Easy Cheesy Enchiladas will never get boring because the filling and topping options are endless. You can substitute cooked chicken or turkey for beans and try one (or all) of these toppings: hot sauce, avocado, black olives, green onion, lettuce, radishes, or low-fat plain yogurt or sour cream.
