Intravenous drug delivery methods need to carefully control the flow of medicine into a patient. Knowing the medicine’s flow rate — or the volume of fluid flowing into the patient each second or minute — is crucial to delivering the right amount of medicine at the right time.
Surprisingly, the correct amount is sometimes not very much at all. Imagine a one-liter bottle divided up into a billion parts. One of those parts is a nanoliter.
Doctors may only need a handful of nanoliters of fluid to flow each minute.

The State of Israel, with its unique social fabric, provides a distinctive context for examining resilience and well-being as positive indicators of mental health. Although a growing body of research has addressed these issues, existing knowledge remains fragmented and lacks an integrative, multilevel synthesis. This narrative review synthesizes empirical research conducted in Israel since 2000 on resilience and well-being in the contexts of war and armed conflict, immigration waves, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The review is guided by a multidimensional analytical framework comprising two axes. The first examines resilience and well-being at the macro, meso, and micro levels, emphasizing societal-, institutional-, community-, and individual-level factors that potentially enhance or maintain resilience and well-being in the face of these challenges. The second compares findings across population groups, including ethnic groups, age cohorts, essential workers, and other vulnerable populations in Israeli society. The findings indicate that resilience and well-being vary across the individual, community, and societal levels and across different societal challenges, reflecting the interaction of personal, relational, and structural factors under prolonged stress. Overall, resilience and well-being emerge as key positive dimensions of mental health, highlighting the need for context-sensitive and multilevel approaches to strengthen adaptive functioning during challenging times.

FDA Approves Imaavy (nipocalimab-aahu) for Warm Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new indication for Imaavy (nipocalimab-aahu) for the treatment of warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (wAIHA) in adult and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older with inadequate response to corticosteroids or immunosuppressive therapy. Imaavy was previously approved for the treatment of generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) in adult and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older who are anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) or anti-muscle-specific tyrosine kinase (MuSK) antibody positive.
wAIHA is a condition in which the immune system mistakenly targets and destroys the body's own red blood cells, leading to anemia that can range from mild to severe and life-threatening. Like gMG, wAIHA is driven by harmful IgG autoantibodies.
Imaavy is a targeted therapy that works by blocking a protein in the body called the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), which normally keeps those disease-causing antibodies circulating in the blood. By blocking this receptor, Imaavy speeds up the removal of those harmful antibodies, helping to reduce the damage they cause.
Imaavy is administered as an intravenous infusion. The approval was granted to Janssen Biotech, Inc.

FDA Approves Drug to Treat HIV Infection in Newborns
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Tivicay PD tablets for oral suspension (dolutegravir) to treat HIV infection in babies from birth up to four weeks weighing at least 2 kg, in combination with other antiretroviral agents. Tivicay and Tivicay PD were previously approved for adults and children older than four weeks.
Condition
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body's immune system, increasing the chances of developing serious infections or cancer and without treatment can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). There is no cure for HIV, but prevention and treatment options are available.
Data Supporting Tivicay PD in Newborns
Data from the IMPAACT 2023 study and pharmacokinetic modeling data supported the application. In this study (NCT05406583), 48 newborns exposed to HIV 1 and weighing at least 2 kg received Tivicay PD from birth for up to six weeks, in combination with standard-of-care antiretroviral medications to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission. The newborns were followed for 16 weeks. Results showed the drug levels of Tivicay PD in newborns were similar to those associated with efficacy in adults. The drug’s safety profile in newborns was also similar to that observed in older pediatric and adult patients.
Safety Information
Patients should not receive Tivicay or Tivicay PD if they had previous allergic reactions to the drug, or if they are also receiving dofetilide. Serious allergic reactions have been reported. Patients should be monitored for liver damage. Immune resconstitution syndrome has been reported in patients treated with combination antiretroviral therapy.
Taking Tivicay or Tivicay PD with certain other medications may cause the drug to stop working against HIV or lead to serious side effects. Patients or their caregivers should tell their healthcare provider about all medications they are taking before starting Tivicay or Tivicay PD.
Tivicay tablets and Tivicay PD tablets for oral suspension are not substitutable on a milligram-per-milligram basis.

Tivicay PD received priority review for this population.

Today, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya, M.D., Ph.D., announced that Wendy Weber, N.D., Ph.D., has been selected to serve as director of NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). Since October 2025, Dr. Weber has provided scientific leadership and strategic counsel and contributed to budget oversight to NCCIH as acting deputy director. She began her new role on August 23, 2026.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) is pleased to announce the selection of Wendy J. Weber, N.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., as the next director of NCCIH, effective August 23, 2026.
“I am genuinely honored to be stepping into this role, and I'm excited about what's ahead,” said Dr. Weber. “I am so excited to take on the leadership for the Center and bring us into the next chapter.”
Dr. Weber has been an instrumental part of NCCIH over the last 17 years. Since October 2025, she served as acting deputy director of NCCIH, providing scientific leadership and strategic counsel during a period of transition. Before this, Dr. Weber served as the branch chief for the Clinical Research in Complementary and Integrative Health Branch in NCCIH’s Division of Extramural Research and was responsible for the oversight of NCCIH-supported clinical trials.
As NCCIH director, Dr. Weber will remain committed to scientific rigor and advancing NCCIH’s programs in pain research and whole person health.
“Her combination of clinical training in naturopathic medicine and doctoral-level research training in epidemiology gives Dr. Weber a rare dual perspective, bridging complementary health practice with rigorous scientific methodology,” said National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Weber has held a series of increasingly senior leadership roles at NCCIH and brings extensive experience with NIH and NCCIH programs, including the Pain Management Collaboratory, Helping to End Addiction Long-term® Initiative, Science of Behavior Change, and Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory.
Dr. Weber earned an M.P.H. and Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of Washington and a doctorate
of naturopathic medicine (N.D.) from Bastyr University. Prior to joining NIH, Dr. Weber was a clinician-scientist and associate professor at Bastyr University. As an NCCIH-funded researcher, she was the first naturopathic physician to receive an NIH career development award, which supported her work on botanical interventions.

The Science of Behavior Change (SOBC) program used a systematic approach to improve our understanding of the underlying mechanisms that would drive behavior change. Unhealthful behaviors—such as smoking, drug and alcohol abuse, overeating, and a sedentary lifestyle—contribute to negative health outcomes and common diseases. Effective approaches to adopting and maintaining healthy behaviors remain few. Though some interventions may lead to changes in behavior in some people, scientists rarely know how or why they work. SOBC researchers used a scientific method to investigate how and why people adopt and sustain healthy behaviors. SOBC brought together scientists from various disciplines, spanning basic and translational science across different health-related behaviors, to explore how a focus on the mechanisms of behavior change in the development of behavior change interventions could reliably improve health outcomes.

Researchers sustained the organoids for nearly six years, potentially unlocking longer term studies of neurodevelopmental disorders
A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded scientific team has shown that under the right circumstances, 3D cell culture models of human brain tissue, known as organoids, can express features of later stage brain development. This breakthrough could turn previously unattainable, long-term, benchtop studies of neurodevelopmental disorders into a reality.
“The unprecedented longevity and lifelike qualities of these tissue models could afford us the opportunity to dig deeper into how conditions such as autism emerge and unfold later in life,” said Andrea Beckel-Mitchener, Ph.D., acting director of NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
While animal models replicate some key features of human brain development, they are not ideal for studying a process that naturally occurs over nearly two decades. Since it is often not feasible to directly examine this process in humans at a cellular level, researchers have sought to build realistic organoids as alternatives.
These models have generally been short-lived, however, only mimicking early development over months in culture. Past attempts have been held back by high batch-to-batch variability as well. A team led by Paola Arlotta, Ph.D., at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, previously solved the latter challenge, reporting a method of producing stem-cell derived cerebral cortex organoids of a consistent cellular composition.
In this new study, Arlotta and colleagues tested their organoids’ ability to survive and continue to develop over an extended period. During periods in which organoids survived for nearly six years, the researchers tracked the gene expression, biological age, as indicated by chemical alterations to the genome, and structure of organoid cells and with single-cell resolution.
They detected the emergence and maturation of neurons as well as their supporting glial cells, with many milestones, including signatures of postnatal development, occurring in the same cadence they would naturally in the human brain. Biological age clocks, which are models trained on real-world human data, demonstrated that their molecular and chronological ages matched, signifying that the organoids developed at a slow, realistic pace, despite being grown outside the context of the body.
Neurons also exhibited functional maturity by establishing connections between each other and firing electrical signals that the organoids sustained for at least two years. The authors specifically grew tissue in a fluid that supported this activity, which they suspect was key to their organoids’ neuronal longevity.
“The brain doesn’t develop in a vacuum. It’s an organ of incredible complexity that interacts with so many other systems. It was not a given at all that our simplified model would match natural development in this many ways,” said co-first author Irene Faravelli, M.D., Ph.D., who conducted this work as a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard.
To be more certain that what they were seeing was not just circumstantial, the authors transferred neurons from older to younger organoids and then gauged their response to the new environment. Despite receiving signals telling them otherwise, the older cells continued progressing as if they were still housed in their prior organoids, skipping developmental steps compared to their younger neighbors.
“I like to think of this as a sort of ‘warping of developmental time’ indicating that the organoid cells record and recall the time they have already spent in culture. This suggests their development is driven by a cell-intrinsic clock, reflecting mechanisms of endogenous human brain development,” said Arlotta.
The findings expand on what scientists previously thought was possible for organoids to accomplish and, moving forward, the authors intend to continue pushing the boundaries. Future research could build on this study by aiming to add anatomical complexity to these organoids, simulating developmental disorders, or testing experimental interventions.
“There is still much to learn about how the embryo naturally builds a progressively more complex and mature brain,” Arlotta said. “Applying these lessons to organoids will allow us to model unexplored events of human brain maturation that occur after birth.”

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has one of the lowest five-year survival rates of any cancer, in large part because it is rarely caught early. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya, M.D., Ph.D., announced the selection of John Gaitanis, M.D., as director of NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Dr. Gaitanis is set to begin his role on August 23, 2026.
As NICHD director, Dr. Gaitanis will shepherd the investment of NICHD’s approximately $1.7 billion annual budget, facilitating research to advance maternal, gynecologic, and child health, as well as the health of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He will lead a staff of about 1,100 who either conduct research at NICHD or support some of the institute’s approximately 2,300 research grants and projects at organizations throughout the United States and internationally.
“With the burden of chronic disease on the rise, Dr. Gaitanis’s forward-thinking approaches for NICHD research will help us adapt to the realities of today,” Dr. Bhattacharya said. “We’re eager for research advances in prevention, precision, and systems-level understanding to pinpoint root causes of these conditions and yield transformative advances in clinical care to improve health for women, children, and people with disabilities.”
Dr. Gaitanis, a nationally respected expert in complex neurodevelopmental disorders, epilepsy, and autism, brings nearly three decades of clinical, academic, and leadership experience to the position. He previously served as Chief of Child Neurology at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, and Director of Child Neurology at Brown Medical School in Providence, Rhode Island. Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Gaitanis has advanced research and clinical care for individuals with complex neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions, expanded access to specialized services, and trained physicians to deliver comprehensive, individualized care. His work has also advanced clinician education and evidence-informed approaches that support the health, communication needs, autonomy, and dignity of nonspeaking individuals with autism.
Dr. Gaitanis received his M.D. from Brown Medical School and completed his pediatrics residency at the University of Rochester. He subsequently completed his neurology training at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, where he served as chief resident, followed by fellowship training in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Gaitanis previously served on the board of the Epilepsy Foundation of New England and currently serves on the board of the Medical Academy of Pediatrics and Special Needs (MAPS), a national leader in translating emerging science into clinical care for children with severe, chronic, and complex medical conditions. MAPS is home to the only U.S. fellowship program of its kind, providing physicians with advanced training in the application of translational medicine across this highly complex and historically underserved pediatric population. In recognition of his leadership and contributions to the field, Dr. Gaitanis received the MAPS Trailblazer Award in 2025.

This may explain their rapid increase in incidence, representing roughly 30% of all neuroendocrine tumors. NETs represent about 3% of all lung cancers. The incidence of pulmonary NETs is low, although reported to have increased over the past 30 years. According to the surveillance, epidemiology and end results program (SEER) database from 2003, the combined incidence has been 1.57/100 000 inhabitants. The median age at diagnosis for bronchial NETs is 64 years and for thymic NETs 59 years. The main therapy for bronchial NETs is surgical resection. The surgical approach is dependent on the size, location and tissue type. Bronchoscopic laser excision of intraluminal typical bronchial NETs should be considered a suboptimal treatment and reserved for inoperable patients or performed as preoperative disobliterating procedure. Cytotoxic treatment combined with surgical resection when indicated has been the standard for metastatic bronchial and thymic NETs, although the available chemotherapy regimens demonstrate a rather poor effect. Chemotherapy for small-cell lung cancer (SCLC), which is a chemosensitive but not curable cancer, is discussed in the appropriate guidelines.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to represent an ongoing US public health crisis, necessitating strong efforts aimed at awareness and prevention. The most up-to-date annual report from the CDC noted "more than 2.5 million cases of syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia" diagnosed in the US in 2022.[1] Of new US cases of STIs diagnosed or reported annually, about half of new infections occur among persons aged 15-24 years.
