Since 2007, at least nine unrelated children from Ladera Ranch, a small community in Orange County, Southern CA, USA, have been diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a very rare tumour of bone and surrounding soft tissues that mainly affects children and young adults. If the tumour has not spread, the 5-year survival is nearly 75%. The report of a substantial number of Ewing sarcoma cases within a small area, considering the rarity of the disease (an annual incidence of nearly three cases per million people in the USA), has left community members, patients and families, and experts with many unanswered questions. Concerns have been raised that possible environmental factors may be involved. However, as it is the case for most childhood cancers, Ewing sarcoma does not yet have an established cause.

Ultra-processed foods (UPF) are widely consumed and have been linked to obesity and hypertension, risk factors of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and the common clear cell (cc) RCC subtype. We evaluated the association between UPF and RCC.

Noncommunicable and injury-related nervous system disorders (NINSDs)—including cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, neurodevelopmental disorders, neuromuscular conditions, brain cancers, and traumatic brain injuries—are major contributors to morbidity, disability, and premature mortality in the Americas. However, comprehensive regional and national assessments remain limited. We assessed the burden of NINSDs and their attributable risk factors in the Americas from 1990 to 2023.
