Microgrippers for myriad miniature biopsies

Microgrippers for myriad miniature biopsies: Typical diagnosis of upper urinary tract cancers requires removal of suspicious tissue with forceps, a technically challenging procedure that only samples one region of the organ. NIBIB-funded researchers are developing preclinical microgrippers that could be deployed throughout the upper urinary tract, which could potentially grab tiny pieces of tissue at hundreds of different areas and someday facilitate early detection of disease.

Sleep Disorders and Complementary Health Approaches

https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/sleep-disorders-and-complementary-health-approaches?nav=govd A variety of complementary health approaches have been studied to see whether they are helpful for insomnia and other sleep disorders. Relaxation techniques, such as guided imagery and progressive muscle relaxation, are sometimes used as part of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, the most strongly recommended treatment for insomnia. Whether relaxation techniques are helpful if used alone is uncertain; there’s not much research evidence on this topic. Melatonin supplements may be helpful for sleep problems caused by shift work or jet lag. They may also help people with insomnia fall asleep more quickly and feel less sleepy in the daytime. However, they have not been shown to be helpful for other aspects of insomnia, such as the amount of time spent awake during the night. Music-based interventions may improve sleep quality in people with insomnia, but it’s uncertain whether they can also reduce the severity of insomnia or the number of times a person wakes up during the night.

Custom alterations: mending genes for long-lasting effects

Custom alterations: mending genes for long-lasting effects: NIBIB-funded researchers are working to bring in vivo gene editing to the fore. Through rational engineering of lipid nanoparticles, this collaborative team developed a way to effectively target specific organs in the body to precisely deliver therapeutic cargo, including gene-editing molecules. Their research demonstrated that a one-time treatment with their nanoparticles resulted in durable gene editing in mouse lungs for nearly two years. Further, their technique showed promise in correcting a mutation present in a currently untreatable form of cystic fibrosis in several models of the disease.

Sexual dysfunction is generally neglected by care teams who usually lack the tools and training needed to address this issue. In this Lancet Haematology Series, authors describe sexual health in patients with haematological malignancies. First, the topic is summarised in a Review that includes a description of the type of issues that patients can have, methods for assessment of sexual function, and practices that can improve sexual function. In the second Review, the topic of sexual dysfunction following haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation is discussed. Finally, the third Review covers sexually transmitted infections in people with haematological malignancies. The three papers call for a change in management of sexual health following the diagnosis of a haematological malignancy and provide practical guidance to clinicians and other health-care providers working with patients to ensure that this important aspect of their lives is not ignored.
