More Information: The FDA does not recommend a deferral period for individuals who have received a nonreplicating, inactivated, or mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine, which encompasses all FDA approved or authorized COVID-19 vaccines. Individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 or have received COVID-19 vaccines or other vaccines are eligible to donate blood, and the U.S. depends on such volunteer blood donors to save patients’ lives when they need a blood transfusion. Bottom Line: Blood donated by individuals who have received an FDA-approved/authorized COVID-19 vaccine and meet all required eligibility criteria for blood donation is safe for transfusion.
