Ongoing HIV Replication Replenishes Viral Reservoirs During Therapy
An NIH-funded study published today in Nature shows how ongoing HIV replication can help maintain stores, or reservoirs, of the virus in HIV-infected patients undergoing antiretroviral therapy who have achieved undetectable blood levels of HIV. The findings provide new insights into how the virus persists in the body—information that is essential for developing strategies to eliminate viral reservoirs and ultimately achieving a cure for HIV infection.
