New TB Vaccine Approach Shows Promise in Mice

An experimental tuberculosis (TB) vaccine composed of genetically modified Mycobacterium smegmatis, a close relative of the bacterium that causes TB, has been found to protect mice against infection, according to a new study supported by NIAID. In mice that received the experimental vaccine, levels of TB bacteria were 1,000 times lower than in those that received the vaccine that is currently available, known as BCG. Though encouraged by these results, the study authors caution that further testing of the modified M. smegmatis vaccine is needed before it might be evaluated in human clinical trials.
