The new science of pharmacogenomics aims to understand how an individual's genetic make-up affects his or her response to a specific drug or class of drugs. By taking into account the effects genes can have on processes and characteristics such as drug metabolizing enzymes, drug transporter activity, and receptor sensitivity, health care providers are better able to recommend the best drug for each patient. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) has just released its new book, Concepts in Pharmacogenomics, by Martin M. Zdanowicz, Ph.D.,M.A., to help educate pharmacists about this emerging scientific field.
This practical guide is presented in three parts. Section 1 covers fundamentals of pharmacogenomics, introducing the basic mechanisms involved in the relationship between genes and drugs. Section 2 details current applications of this developing science. Section 3 presents continuing issues and debates in pharmacogenomics. By providing an overview of the science behind pharmacogenomics, followed by detailed chapters related to its clinical application and implementation, Zdanowicz provides a thorough introduction to this evolving science. The book features case studies, clinical pearls, and illustrations of key concepts.
Instructors are invited to visit http://www.ashp.org/pharmacogenomics to keep updated on this dynamic field with news, web links, and additional resources.
